Crimes and Unspeakable Mysteries in Victorian London

London, 1880. A Fascinating City Full of Secrets

London stands at the heart of the British Empire. It is a vast, thriving metropolis where fortunes are made and lost, scientific discoveries challenge the boundaries of what seems possible, and appearances sometimes matter far more than the truth.

In the drawing rooms of Kensington, respectable families go to great lengths to protect their reputations. In Whitechapel, people have learned to distrust the authorities. Along the docks of Limehouse, goods change hands amid rumours, whispered deals and carefully guarded secrets. Wherever you turn, someone has a very good reason to keep their business private.

This is the London where you will make your living as investigators.

You are a team of independent professionals, called upon to handle sensitive cases. You have neither the authority nor the resources of Scotland Yard, but you enjoy something just as valuable: the freedom to pursue your investigations your own way.

You will need to earn the trust of reluctant witnesses, cultivate useful contacts and occasionally stand up to people with considerable influence. A letter of introduction might get you into an exclusive gentlemen's club, while a little tact could persuade someone in a working-class neighbourhood to share what they know. And those with something to hide will certainly have ways of making your work difficult.

From Criminal Investigations to Occult Mysteries

Victorian London is a wonderful place to explore if you enjoy investigations, mysteries and unexpected discoveries.

You might look into a series of inexplicable thefts at a supposedly impregnable bank, uncover the secrets of a respectable institution, or try to understand why the work of a celebrated physician is causing so much concern.

Sometimes, however, a perfectly rational explanation simply won't do.

Spiritualism is all the rage in London's fashionable salons. Occult societies attract curious and ambitious minds, while certain scientists pursue experiments they would be wiser to abandon. Most strange occurrences have thoroughly human explanations, but not all of them. In this world, the supernatural is real, and some discoveries may challenge everything your investigators believe about the nature of reality.

You never quite know what your next case will bring.

Fifty Investigations Where Your Decisions Matter

Eldritch London 1880 offers fifty independent scenarios, each a new opportunity to explore another side of the Victorian capital.

Every adventure presents a living situation, populated by characters with their own interests, ambitions and plans. Your investigators are free to choose their methods and priorities. You can follow your hunches, seek out allies, negotiate with your opponents or take risks to get the answers you need.

Events unfold in response to your actions. An unexpected encounter might open up new possibilities, while a careless decision could land you in serious trouble. The Teller has everything needed to improvise and bring the story to life, without anyone knowing exactly how events will unfold.

And if you grow attached to your investigators, there is no reason to leave them behind after a single case. London's recurring characters and organisations offer plenty of opportunities to develop lasting relationships and build your own ongoing story within the setting.
